Question:
I recently adopted a 2-year-old cat who was unfortunately declawed. He's a sweetie pie, but with one problem: He often poops and sometimes pees outside of his litter box. The vet found nothing wrong with him physically. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:
Were the cat's paws thoroughly examined? A tiny ulcerated finger or toe tip or infected bone(s) in his mutilated paws could make using the litter box a painful experience.
Some types of litter stick to the paws and cause irritation that may be compounded by fine dust in poor-quality clay litter. In addition, a dome over the box may hold in noxious fumes if the litter is not cleaned out two or three times a day.
Try a dust-free, non-sticky litter such as Purina Yesterdays News
, made from newspaper. Buy the biggest litter box you can find, and don't use a cover. Set it on a sheet of plastic or an old towel to make cleaning up accidents easier.
