Question:

I was dismayed to read your encouragement of the use of the toxic flea-tick deterrents like Frontline and Program. We have totally eliminated fleas and ticks with fresh garlic and brewer's yeast on our golden retriever. When I see a tick in the house, it is on the floor, having dropped off the dog.

Answer:

I am even more dismayed by your interpretation of whatever I may have written on this topic. I consistently advise readers to take every measure of flea control to avoid the need to use potentially harmful anti-flea and tick drugs. These measures include giving brewer's yeast (also to cats) and fresh garlic to dogs in their food daily (not "on them," as your letter implies). Full details are posted at my website, TwoBitDog.com/DrFox, and in my book "Dog Body, Dog Mind." When these measures fail, the products that you mention can be effective, but I would only advise as an emergency/last resort. I deplore their routine, preventive use as promoted by the drug manufacturers.

Dr. Fox,

How much garlic and how much brewers yeast should I put in the food for my two chihuahuas?  I feed them Fresh Pet dog food and would like to add the garlic and brewers yeast to it since we live in the Northeast and have tons of ticks here.
Thanks for your help in this matter...................Bettye  Wink

I would also like to get my dog off of frontline and advantage.  How much fresh garlic and brewers yeast daily for a 75 pound dog?  Thank you.

I want to try the brewers yeast and garlic for tic control.  However, I am very worried to try a holistic approach.  I almost died from a tic borne disease in 2000 and I have used frontline ever since.  When I applied the frontline my dogs run around like it is burning their skin.  I really would like to try the holistic approach but how much should I use for 15lb shi-tzu's?  Does it really work?

I have 3 Aussie Sheppards: male 5yrs & 135lbs, male 2.5 yrs & 95lbs, both neutered at 3 months. and female 2.5 yrs 45lbs.spade at 3 months and litter mates with the other 2.5 yr old.
Thank you so much for your work.
