Question:
I had to have my dog put to sleep. He was 13 years old and very sick. I had taken good care of him and provided a good home. The vet said it would be best to put him to sleep, but now I wish I had not. I am heartbroken and depressed. He was my best friend. How do I get over this?

Answer:
You have my sympathy and understanding. Your veterinarian could have drawn things out, keeping your dog alive and suffering and racking up hefty medical bills before the end came. What quality of life would your dog have enjoyed during that time?
Euthanasia is a difficult decision, and your veterinarian clearly had your beloved pet's best interests at heart. You should see this as a responsible decision -- a liberation for your dog.
Your grief will be profound, catching you off guard at unexpected times, but it will recede over time. Many people find relief by volunteering at the local animal shelter or, when the time is right, adopting a dog that needs a loving home and caregiver like you.
