Question:

My daughter, who has three cats, told me an enchanting story of a recent experience. I said she should write it up and send it to an animal expert, so here it is: "I bought a Led Zeppelin concert DVD that was delivered this week, so last night I watched it. I was maybe 90 minutes into it, and our cat Mooner was perched in his usual place on the couch. Other cats were nowhere to be seen. When 'Whole Lotta Love' came on, cat Mitzi appeared and plopped herself down in front of the TV, but was not watching it. She stretched out and rolled around on her back, then rolled some more. While on her back, her paws were going all over the place in the air -- she was dancing! This went on for a couple of minutes, and I was just amazed. Unknown to me, Mooner was also watching Mitzi and when she got up and left, Mooner went to the exact same place and imitated what she just did -- same rolling around, same feet in the air!"

Answer:

Cats are indeed "copycats," but responding to a rock concert and moving limbs in rhythm with the music is truly notable. I would appreciate hearing from other readers on how their cats, dogs and other pets respond to music and DVD concerts. The CD series "Through a Dog's Ear" provides classical-music scores that many dogs seem to enjoy. Maybe cats would, too.

My cat Baby paid little attention to rock music, including Led Zeppelin, which was the norm in my home. (Except when she heard someone singing about her. Lots of songs sing about "Baby"!) However, when we played classical music, it was obvious that she loved it. She would become very relaxed, turn her ears towards the music, close her eyes and start purring. She also was kind of tripped out by jazz. Her ears would dart about at the sudden unexpected notes coming from the different speakers. I'm not sure if she enjoyed it, but it certainly piqued her interest.

She was a very vocal cat. We recorded her, and when we played it back to her, her response was quite humorous. I think she was a little confused seeing and hearing herself on TV. She also liked watching nature shows on TV. Any animal intrigued her, but she paid especially close attention to shows with other cats, rodents/small critters, birds, or insects.

Unfortunately she lost her hearing at 17. During that transition, she would go to a corner and meow into it, and would also sit in front of a mirror watching herself meow, probably wondering why she wasn't hearing it. I'm positive she understood the concept of mirrors and recognized herself.

In 1990, my boyfriend and I brought his friend's cat Bubba over to meet my friend's cat Kitty, and my cat Baby was the runt of their litter. Sadly, I had to euthanize her a few months ago. I had her for 20 years.
I miss you Baby! Rest in peace.
