Question:
I have a 3-1/2-year-old toy poodle with leaky eyes. I know this is common in poodles, but have heard that a product called Angel Eyes corrects the problem. I would like your opinion, as there have been both pros and cons.

Answer:
There are various eye drops available that can help dogs with chronic eye tearing and inflammation. But I would advise against such treatment until a veterinarian has examined your dog.
There are various conditions that can cause "leaky" eyes, which, if neglected, can lead to more serious eye problems. Sometimes, the eyelid is turned in a condition called entropion that is best corrected surgically; or sometimes the tear ducts are blocked.
Some dogs develop chronic eye and nose problems because of allergies, viral infections like herpes or adverse vaccination reactions (vaccinosis). Be advised that your dog does not need annual booster shots, small breeds are especially prone to vaccinosis. Also, be alert to dental problems. The smaller the breed, the greater the probability of periodontal disease, which can weaken the immune system and lead to a host of health issues.
