Question:
I would like to pass on to you and other readers the name of a book that has been immensely helpful in living with our blind dog, Maggie. When we adopted her from the Friends of Homeless Animals in Aldie, Va., one of the volunteers suggested we read "Living with Blind Dogs" by Caroline D. Levin.
Levin was originally a people nurse in the field of ophthalmology. She's gifted with the ability to explain things thoroughly and clearly. Her book covers the physiology of the eye, diseases that can cause blindness and, most important to us, techniques and skills that help a blind dog live as safely, comfortably and happily as possible.
Over the years, I've noticed a fair number of letters to your column about canine blindness and think many readers would benefit from knowing about this book. There are also several Internet sites that could prove helpful, such as www.BlindDogs.net.

Answer:
Many thanks for drawing attention to these valuable resources that will help people cope with a blind dog and enjoy some quality of life together.
It is amazing how dogs (and cats, too) can adapt to loss of vision, and how other animals in the home seem to understand. I recall instances of a cat becoming a guide for a blind companion dog in the family; and a German shepherd who became the eyes for an old cocker spaniel, opening doors for her and leading her along by holding one ear.
