Question:
About two years ago, our dog brought home an unweaned, 4-day-old kitten whose mother probably dropped him while transporting him to another location. We took the newborn kitten in and raised him. However, he has now become a problem. Teddy is very aggressive and attacks us without any provocation. His attacks are fierce and often draw blood (at least once requiring medical attention). Our friends and family call Teddy "the cat from hell" or "psycho cat." His attacks on us happen about once a month, but when anyone else comes into the house, he hisses, growls, bares his teeth and lunges at our guests. Is there such a thing as a mentally ill cat? Sometimes, he is gentle, sweet and wants to be petted and loved. Other times, he acts as if we're his enemy. What can we do? We don't want to get rid of him because we really love him. Is it possible to modify his behavior?

Answer:
What a touching story of your dog bringing home a kitten! Some dogs are indeed empathetic. Your cat might be too young to have developed a thyroid-gland tumor that causes hyperthyroidism, often associated with a change in temperament and outbursts of aggression. However, this should be ruled out before trying a psychotropic drug to help aggressive tendencies. Also, if your cat has not been neutered, doing so would be the first step. Neutering him will lower his testosterone levels and might make him more docile. Psychotropic drugs include clomipramine and buspirone have been shown to be effective in some cases of feline aggression. I would explore this avenue of treatment. Also consider switching to a natural, whole-food diet.
