Question:
I have a mutt, approximately 12 years old, that showed up where I worked one day. The vet thought she was 6 to 8 months old in 1995. As she got older, off and on, she has had visible blood in her urine, along with frequent urination. This last time she had clots. She would also have severe skin allergies, and her ears were coated with black, along with discharge from her eyes. The last vet I took her to did a urine culture and said she had Corynebacter sp. She prescribed medicine, and she said the prescription would make her extremely ill and that I would have to bring her in and put her on intravenous fluids. Since my dog is old, I did not want to put her through the ordeal. We get your column in our Sunday paper, and I looked up your Web site. I started out making food using your recipe along with using dry dog food. The urinary condition improved but did not go away, nor did the other symptoms. I was afraid to take her off the commercial dog food for fear of her not getting the nutrients she needed. Finall

Answer:
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of good health. The old saying "garbage in, garbage out" omits the "stink between" what goes in and what goes out. My dogs also eat my homemade food and they, like yours, are healthy and have sweet breath. I pity the many dogs with bad breath, and cats, too, who are pushed away rather than embraced when they want to show affection. Of course, many have bad teeth, but many like yours enjoy a new lease on life with a more healthful diet.
