Question:
Maggie, a beagle/terrier mix around 10 years old, loves to have some of my beer or wine when I have a drink. She actually begs for it, whereas our four other dogs (males -- two Labs and two mutts) not only don't want any but don't even like to smell it.Maggie's around 25 pounds, and I'm wondering if it's harmful to her. If not, what should be the limit of her occasional imbibing? I certainly don't want to overdo it but don't mind giving her a bit if it won't hurt her in any way.

Answer:
Many animal species occasionally enjoy inebriation, be it bears, monkeys and elephants enjoying fermented berries and fruits or pigs enjoying cannabis. Some dogs enjoy a sip of beer. Visit any neighborhood pub in the United Kingdom, where a civilized attitude toward dogs means they can accompany their owners into restaurants and pubs. Chances are you will see a chap with his dog under the table enjoying an occasional lap from the beer mug.But all things in moderation: 1 tablespoon of beer per 20 pounds of body weight should suffice. As for wine, I would advise against giving any to dogs because grapes and raisins can damage their kidneys.
