Question:
Our 8-year-old, 6-pound female Maltese tested positive for severe pancreatitis. She's had bloody stools following her rabies vaccinations. Each time, the reaction was more severe. Last time, she had hives and difficulty breathing one hour later, even after premedication of Benadryl and cortisone. She is now one year overdue for all vaccines. What to do?.

Answer:
What to do? Nothing! No more vaccines. I am sure your veterinarian made no mistake in diagnosing acute pancreatitis following each rabies vaccination. To my knowledge, this is a very rare adverse reaction.Have your animal doctor simply write a letter to the effect that your dog was last given a rabies vaccination on whatever date it was, and that, because of serious, life-threatening adverse reactions to the vaccination, no further shots should be given to this dog. This should satisfy any concerned authorities. If there is insistence on revaccination, have a blood titer done. In all probability, revaccination will not be needed.
