Question:
One of our two cats attacked my husband the other night as he turned on a tape recorder of our then-small children opening Christmas presents from years ago. He became quite spooked over this and flew at my husband's back and legs, biting and scratching him. He is never around small children, so it must be the tape recorder itself that produced such a reaction. What do you think? He is such a sweet, docile cat, so this really shocked us.

Answer:
Your cat going nuts over certain sounds and becoming aggressive (my sympathies to your husband) can be explained.Cats will sometimes attack each other or humans in the home when they hear, see or smell a strange cat outdoors. Some of the sounds on the tape your husband played may have mimicked the screams and yowls of a threatening cat. These sounds triggered an instinctual reaction in your confused cat.
