Question:
In a recent column you made a statement about feeding one's cat milk or fish-flavored water. My cat, who is 13 years old, has never had food except from the veterinarian. I was told to not feed the cat milk or fish. What say you?.

Answer:
Some cats are allergic to fish, and cats do not tolerate a lot of cow's milk because of the high lactose content in it that can cause diarrhea. But a little fish gravy/juice or a couple of teaspoons of cow's milk (goat's milk is better), along with equal amounts of warm spring water, add moisture to cats' dry food. They should cause no problems and do more good than harm.Regardless, if your cat has a reaction to either food, the Pet Poison Hotline number is (800) 213-6680. There is a $35 credit card charge, but they are accessible 24/7. All readers should keep this number handy at all times in case of a suspected companion animal poisoning emergency.
