Question:
Perhaps you can explain this: My husband was hospitalized for several days. Our dog Max missed him, and went to the door to alert me to any noise outside. Before I got the call that my husband unexpectedly passed away, Max seemed to know. He acted strange, suddenly pacing the house then lying down by my husband's recliner where he stayed for an hour or so before I got the call from the hospital.

Answer:
My condolences to you and Max. I have heard of similar instances where an animal seems to know when a loved one (human or animal) has died or had a life-threatening accident. Their changed behavior, as you describe, seems evidence enough to support my "quantum theory" of emotional connectedness that I call the "empathosphere."I would like to hear from other readers who have had similar experiences with their animal companions. I will share these responses in a future column.
