Question:
We adopted a neutered male tabby cat eight months ago. He is approximately 2-1/2 to 3 years old and is a very nice cat. We keep him indoors and give him lots of attention, but he has a loud, demanding howl. He howls a lot when he wants something, especially at night when we are trying to sleep. We got him from a no-kill cat shelter that had a lot of cats, so we think he might be missing the company of other cats. The shelter says he was a very social, non-aggressive cat, but was not attached to any one particular cat.My question is, should we get another cat? If so, do you recommend a male or female, and should it be younger or older than he is?.

Answer:
Yes, get a kitten around 10 to 12 weeks of age with a clean bill of health from a veterinarian. The sex of the kitten is not a significant issue, but a female, whom you would have spayed at around 6 months of age, would probably be the most compatible option. Many cats yowl out of loneliness and the desire to go out, so a feline companion is called for. (Siamese cats in particular tend to be very vocal, and it is rude not to talk back.)
