Question:
I have a golden mouse, Apollo, who will be 1 year old in October. For the past month he's been scratching his ears a lot to the point where they're all torn-up and scabby.I read in your column how to get rid of dry skin by using frankincense and olive oil, applying it three times a day. Since I've been using it, his ears are not as red, but he keeps scratching them, only not as much. He's still tearing his ears apart, worse and worse. Please tell me what's wrong with Apollo because I love him too much to see him this way.

Answer:
Your mouse could have skin mites, which the essential oil treatments will not help get rid of. You need to have your pet examined by a veterinarian who can check this possibility out and prescribe a mild insecticide dip. All items in your pet's enclosure must be thrown out and the container sterilized with diluted bleach. Add new toys and bedding material of a different type (since some cage pets are allergic to cedar chips).
