Question:
My spayed cat, Bubbles, was the sweetest kitty until she got to be about four years old. Now she's gotten moody, sometimes hissing and clawing when she's being petted. A couple of times she attacked and scratched my arm. Discipline makes no difference. What should I do?.

Answer:
Your cat may well be suffering from a cystic ovary phenomenon, with her change in behavior being due to excess production of estrogen. Even when both ovaries are removed, a small remnant of tissue may (under the stimulation of the pituitary gland) begin to produce estrogen. So have your veterinarian give Bubbles a long-acting injection of progesterone to counteract this hormonal imbalance.Progesterone has a tranquilizing effect, but a full health checkup is called for before trying this kind of therapy.
