DR.FOX’S HOME-MADE PET TREATS

Make your own pet treats--- unless you buy ideally certified organic treats free of additives, preservatives, and coloring agents, made locally or in the US, and certainly not imported. One or two treats should only be given three or four times a day to avoid addiction, pets becoming over-weight, or refusing to eat their regular food.

FOR CATS---1/2 cup of rice, potato or buckwheat flour as a binder for either 3/4 cup of chopped sardines or mackerel in oil plus one egg; or two eggs, ½ cup chopped liver (chicken or beef) and one tablespoon of grated cheese; or 3/4 cup of fatty ground beef, chicken, turkey or mutton. Mix well, adding sufficient water plus 1 tablespoon of cod liver oil, or two tablespoons of melted, unsalted organic butter to make a soft dough. Roll out into very thin strips and bake slowly in a pre-heated oven at 315 degrees for-20-25 min. Switch off oven and let cool in oven to crispen but not burn. Break into small dime-sized pieces and store in an air-tight container in the 'fridge.

FOR DOGS—1 cup of rice, potato or buckwheat flour as a binder for either 1/2 cup of ground chicken, turkey, mutton, beef liver or  hamburger, and one egg; or two eggs and two tablespoons of peanut butter or grated white cheese. Mix well with water and 1 tablespoon of cod liver or olive oil, or two tablespoons of melted organic, unsalted butter, and follow above directions, breaking into nickel-sized pieces before storage.  For variation, add mashed, cooked yam or sweet potato instead of grated cheese or peanut butter.

Try spicing cats’ and dogs’ treats by mixing in to the dough 1 tablespoon of powdered kelp or seaweed flakes, or 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon or ginger, even cat nip for cats and Brewer’s (not baking) yeast for both. Crush three human daily multi mineral supplements into each batch for good measure. For dogs you can also add 1-2 cloves of finely chopped garlic
